■ The minimum age for marriage with parents’ consent ranges from 0 in Mississippi (for both sexes) to 18 in Florida and Michigan (also for both sexes). In the other states, the minimum ages lie between these extremes, with the female minimum age usually lower than that required for males.

■ The age of consent to sexual intercourse ranges from 7 in Delaware and 12 in Louisiana and Tennessee to 18 in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. In all other states, the age of consent lies somewhere between these extremes, the age of 16 being the most commonly listed. Sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of consent is punishable as statutory rape.
